Add your mods

Add WWMI mods through Timbre: from GameBanana, from an archive or folder, copied in by hand, or a whole XXMI library, and keep them up to date.

How-to7 min readTimbre 26.1028.0 · Overtone 26.1028.0

Timbre takes WWMI mods as they are published, from a link, an archive or a whole XXMI library:

  • Filed for you. Each mod goes under the character its files change, whatever the archive is called.
  • Made native as it lands. Timbre rebuilds each mod in Overtone's own format, so it opens in Blender and survives game updates that renumber bones (what that changes). You do nothing extra.
  • Updates in one press. Timbre notices a newer file on the mod's page and keeps your changes when it updates.

Before you start

From GameBanana

  1. Press Add a mod.
  2. Copy the mod's page link and press Ctrl+V in Timbre's window (⌘V on a Mac; there you can also drag the link from your browser onto the window). If the page has several files, pick one.
  3. Press Download. Where the mod is already in your library, the button reads Update: it opens the update, which picks the file that replaces your copy whole, says what any other file would leave out, and offers to install one beside your copy instead.

A download waits in Downloads on the left bar until it is in.

Browse on the left bar shows GameBanana inside Timbre: the week's most liked mods, what is new for each of your characters, and your mods the site has a newer version of. Press a mod to open its page. To search the site, press Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac), or just start typing on Browse.

From an archive or a folder

For a .zip, .rar or .7z you downloaded, or a mod folder you already have.

  1. Drop it on Timbre's window. Or press Add a mod: the window dims and says Drop a mod anywhere. Drop it, or press Choose files to pick archives. A folder is added by dropping it.
  2. If the archive has a password, Timbre asks for it.
  3. Untick any files you do not want, such as a readme.
  4. Press Import. The window closes, each mod shows in Downloads as it is added, and it appears in your library once it is in.

A mod you did not mean to add is taken out again from History with Take back.

Your archive or folder is left as it was: Timbre copies the mod into the library. A folder holding mods for several characters becomes one mod per character, each filed under its own. If the folder also holds files of its own, such as a readme, untick them, or it stays one folder.

Choices when you add a mod

Choice Default What it does
Wear after adding off, then what you chose last Wears the mod as it lands. Off, turn on Wear on its page later. Settings → Library → Wear after adding is the same choice.
Name What the mod is called, without its character The folder becomes <Character> - <Name>, such as Chisa - Radiant; Timbre shows Radiant on Chisa's page.
Character The character the mod's files change Read from its files, never from the archive's name; From the mod where its files name no one character. Pick one only to file it elsewhere.
Edit author, version and link What the mod's files or its page say Change one only to correct it.

A mod whose files name no character goes under its GameBanana page's character, or the character whose page you dropped it on, or under character/others when there is neither.

Dropped on a mod's page, Timbre asks what the archive is, in the tabs over its name:

Dropped Choices
One archive Update (the default) replaces its files, and Take back in History puts the old ones back for 30 days; Alternate shares the mod's tile, one worn at a time; Separate gets a tile of its own.
Several archives Separate (the default) gives each a tile of its own; Alternate groups them all with the mod.

A line above the buttons says what you should know first: amber where you can go ahead, such as files the update lacks, red where the archive cannot be added, such as a damaged one.

To keep the archives you download, choose a folder under Settings → Folders → Downloaded archives.

Update a mod

A mod whose GameBanana page has a newer file says New version available on its page: press Update. To ask every mod's page at once, press Ctrl+K (⌘K) and pick Check for updates. Timbre imports the new version, keeps your changes, and makes it native again.

Copy a folder in by hand

  1. Close the game.
  2. Copy the mod's folder anywhere in your library.
  3. Start Timbre, or restart it if it was open. It describes the mod and makes it native.
  4. Turn the mod on in Timbre.

The first time Timbre finds folders outside their character folders, it asks whether to organize them by character:

  • Organize moves them, now and from then on.
  • Keep as it is leaves every folder where it is.
  • Not now asks again at the next start.

Mods draw the same either way. Settings → Library → Sort into character folders changes the answer later.

Weapon mods

A weapon mod changes one weapon, whoever holds it. Timbre files one you add alone under weapon/<weapon>/. One that came inside a character's mod stays in that mod's folder and is still a mod of its own. Turning the outfit on turns its weapon on too, and turning the outfit off turns it off. Turn the weapon off alone to wear the outfit without it.

Once your library holds a weapon mod, the top of the library shows Characters and Weapons. Press Weapons to see every weapon with the number of mods on it.

Bring a whole XXMI library

Native mods no longer load in XXMI, so give Timbre a copy and leave XXMI's folder alone.

  1. Under Settings → Folders, press Use beside Suggested mods folder: it makes an empty folder near the game and sets it as Mods. The suggestion shows once Game is set and while Mods is empty; otherwise press Choose beside Mods and pick an empty folder of your own.
  2. Close the game, and copy everything inside your XXMI Mods folder into it.
  3. Start Timbre again. It describes the mods, makes them native and asks whether to organize them by character, as for a folder copied in by hand.
  4. Open Health. Anything still under New mods: press Describe; under Not native yet: press Make native.

Mods whose folder name starts with DISABLED stay off; nothing is renamed. To bring only some mods, import them one at a time as above.

If you set Timbre's Mods to XXMI's own Mods folder instead, Overtone still draws those mods but never makes them native, so they cannot be edited in Blender.

What native means

A native mod is rebuilt once from its own files, instead of being read from its ini files every time it loads.

  • It opens in Blender, and saving there changes it in game (Edit a mod in Blender).
  • It keeps working when a game update renumbers the character's bones. An update that changes her model still needs the author's new version.
  • Nothing is deleted: the ini files, and the .buf files they name, move into the mod's .overtone/legacy/ folder. Textures stay where they are.
  • It no longer loads in XXMI.

A mod Timbre cannot make native is listed under Health → Couldn't be made native, with the reason. It still draws as before. Try again appears once a newer Timbre can do something different.

Where things are

Where What
character/<character>/ That character's mods. Timbre's library shows one page per character.
weapon/<weapon>/ That weapon's mods. Timbre's library shows them under Weapons.
character/others/ Mods whose character is not known yet.
Health → Tidy up No character, Folder names, Downloaded twice, Two folders, one mod and Leftover files.

A mod shows on its character's page even if you keep its folder somewhere else. To file mods under another character, select them with the round check on each tile and press Move to.

Timbre names a mod's folder after its character and the mod, such as Chisa - Radiant, and renames it when you rename the mod or move it to another character. Folder names lists the folders named another way, with the name each would get, and renames them all at once.

A running game shows a new mod a moment after Timbre adds it (Play with Overtone).
